Focus, methodology and saying “no” still win for agencies.

After a deep dive into the latest agency benchmarks in this morning’s Agency Bites, one thing is crystal clear: the principles of differentiation, focus, and methodology are as crucial as ever.

The difference is how tightly these things are now linked.

  1. Differentiation: It’s all about knowing what sets you apart and doubling down on it. That focus makes it easier to build a clear way of working. The data backs it up too:

agencies that carve out a unique niche and lean into it see tangible growth and +5% operating profit.

  2. Streamlined Services: With something to be famous for, focusing on a few key services makes sense (2-5 is the sweet spot). Beyond that, it gets harder to maintain any kind of consistency in how you deliver. Everything becomes more bespoke again. A bit less scalable.

Agencies that streamline their offerings find that sweet spot where efficiency and quality meet.

  3. Methodologies: A clear, repeatable process not only improves operations but also reassures clients they’re in good hands. Once you have that, you stop reinventing the wheel every time.

Agencies with clear methodologies are already pushing close to 50% gross profit on average, well ahead of the pack.

At Atomic, we made a conscious call to double down on the services where we had a clear methodology and a distinct way of working. Not just what we were good at, but where we could be consistent, repeatable, and confident in how we delivered.

It sharpened the proposition, but more importantly, it made the business more efficient and easier to buy from. Clients aren’t just buying outcomes. They’re buying confidence in how you’ll get there.

Yes, AI is making delivery faster and cheaper, but it’s also putting pressure on anything that looks like commoditised production. The agencies that will hold their ground (and grow) are those operating higher up the value chain, where judgment, direction, and decision-making still matter.

These fundamentals are timeless. The latest BenchPress “State of the Agency Nation” data from the team at The Wow Company, does a good job of putting numbers behind it.
